What is the Title I Reading Program? Title I is a federal program that funds supplemental educational opportunities to help students meet state standards. Funding for Title I is based on a school district’s percentage of free and reduced lunch participants. Waynesville Elementary provides Title I reading services for students in Kindergarten through fourth grade. Title I is not Special Education. How did my child qualify for Title I? Students are identified for Rainbow Reading based on the following criteria: ~ Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) - This is a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills. ~Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) – This assesses accuracy, fluency, and comprehension in reading over time. ~Teacher Recommendation- Classroom performance and test scores. How long will my child be in the program? Rainbow Reading is a flexible program. Our goal is to provide your child with the extra support needed to be successful in his/her classroom. Your child may be in Rainbow Reading for the entire year or may only need to be in part of the year. Your child’s Rainbow Reading teacher will meet regularly with classroom teachers to discuss student progress and monitor data to determine if your child is ready to exit the program. How often will my child be seen for Title I Rainbow Reading? Students in Grades first through fourth grade will attend Rainbow Reading Monday through Thursday for 30 minutes. Kindergarten students will come Monday through Thursday for 15 minutes. During this time, the classroom teacher will be doing reading groups or having structured free time with the other children.
